Yet here I am adulting 🤷🏻‍♀️💸🚦🗂️💻 What’s your nemesis? Mine is traffic and commuting 100%

Being a grown up sounded way cooler when I was a kid. 🫠 My daughter is far more perceptive about adult life: “Why is there always traffic?” “Ugh too many meetings!” and “Mommy can you work, so we can have money to go on vacation?”

I’m Natalie, an oncologist (ie cancer physician), located in the PNW. I work a lot. My husband works a lot. We’re both on call a lot. I love bringing our dog Nike and two young girls wherever we can. Not gonna lie, it’s not easy to get outside, but we do our best.
.
Here you’ll find practical itineraries and tips for exploring the PNW area. We’re not backpacking 20 miles. We’re not driving hours on long road trips because we don’t have that much PTO. We’re not waking up at 2am for sunrise hikes because we’re too tired. I’m not tandem wearing a baby and toddler up mountains (kudos to the amazing hiking moms who do, but I’m not that fit because …. life and work). I love cute aesthetic cabins, small family farms, and trying local foods. I give honest reviews of things and share places I genuinely love.

And you’ll get to see snapshots of my life inside and outside the cancer hospital, cute dog pics, my baking, and more because I can’t bother with a niche.

1️⃣ My flower crown for Nike, the day of my accident, which is now almost 10 weeks! Throwback to old school instagram when flower crowns and fancy dog bandanas were the rage.
.
2️⃣ Some wins!🙌🏼
• Took a day trip to Whidbey Island. Used crutches a lot and felt pretty good. A kind stranger took candid photos of our chaos “since that’s that we’ll miss the most when they grow up” and wished me a good recovery.
• I got my last set of X-rays and all the bones have healed enough I can remove the boot as tolerated.
• I can drive again! I take the boot off in the car, and put it back on when I’m out. Had to practice driving again supervised at first.
• I took a shower by myself and it was glorious.
.
3️⃣ Celebrated the first day of fall with busting out my jeans and starting to walk (sort of). 🍁
• After my X-rays, I thought great, I can totally starting walk now without my boot, but clearly I was wrong.
• I tripped and stumbled from weakness/instability, and it is SO painful when I’m out of the boot. I’ve developed secondary plantar fasciitis and all the foot muscles have atrophied. So working on building strength and getting stronger each day.
.
4️⃣ Going back to my clinic was tiring but good for a sense of normalcy. Husband had to drive me to work, and I was using a scooter, left ankle brace, right ankle boot, plus compression socks for all the swelling.🩼🤕❤️‍🩹
• I put my Woobles fox I crocheted during my recovery on my desk. To remind me how shitty it is to be sick and how convoluted navigating our US health care system is (even for us physicians who work IN the system!). So it grants me extra patience and empathy for the bad days at work.
• My office buddy crocheted these adorable turtles for as a welcome back
• Just have to say how great my colleagues, the staff, my oncology patients are. Fred Hutch is the best.

I told you how professional I looked as a one legged photographer, right?

I think these turned out pretty darn good - I mean could you tell these were taken by someone hobbling around on crutches with their camera the whole day? My whole body was soooo sore but worth it.
.
We had an amazing weekend at the Hood Canal on the Olympic Peninsula, hosted by @mikes.beach.resort and @olympicoysterco (we paid for the glamping tent).
.
• S’more’s with some secret ingredients that make it 100% better🍫
• Woke up to a glorious pink sunrise and orange sun🌅
• Kayaks and scuba diving (sadly I had to sit this out with my broken ankle, but next time, I’ll be back to see the Giant Pacific Octopus)🐙
• Glamping Tent by the water🏕️ my brace, crutches, and boot hidden behind the bed lol
• Oyster beach for U-pick oysters and clams, plus we got to see their oyster farm🌊
• Learning to shuck our own oysters with the Sea to Suite room service oysters! Check out their Oyster Palooza next month🦪
